Sprain & Tears
Sprain and strains are common injuries experienced by people during physical activity. Both sprains & strains have similar signs and symptoms but involve different parts of the body.
Sprains are overstretching or tearing of ligaments (fibrous tissue which connects bone to bone), often caused by trauma like falling or twisting of the joints. A sprain can occur at any joint of the body but the most common joints are ankle and wrist.
Symptoms :
Symptoms include- pain, swelling, bruising, unable to move a joint, and may even feel a pop or tearing of fibers at the time of injury. Strains are tearing or overstretching of muscle fibers or tendons (tissue that connects muscle to bone), often caused by sudden twisting or pulling movements of the body. It can happen suddenly or develop over time. Most common strains occur in back or hamstring muscles.
Symptoms include- pain, muscle spasms, swelling, restriction of movements.
Treatment :
The treatment depends on the severity of sprains and strains; Initial treatment for both sprains and strains follows the PRICE protocol. PRICE stands for
- Protection of the injured area
- Rest, stay off the injured part
- Ice, immediately applied to the injured part to reduce pain and swelling.
- Compression bandages should be used to immobilize and support the injured area
- Elevation, keeping the injured area elevated (in relation to the rest of the body) to minimize the swelling.
Management at AktivHealth :
The physiotherapist follows acute management to help minimize pain, swelling, maintain the joint’s range of motion and gradually strengthen the muscles around the injured part. They help the client to improve proprioception and balance thus preventing future sprains and strains.
