Neuropathy

Neuropathy refers to disease of one or more nerves. It can be motor, sensory and autonomic

  • Motor – difficulty in doing movement
  • Sensory – altered sensation such as pain, numbness, tingling
  • Autonomic – difficulty in breathing, digestion, urination etc

Symptoms present depend on the type of nerve and the location. Neuropathies have multiple variants such as idiopathic neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy, hereditary neuropathy, peripheral neuropathy and immune neuropathy.

Causes:

Several reasons may contribute to neuropathy:

  • Diabetes
  • Vitamin deficiencies (B vitamins – including B-1, B-6 and B-12, vitamin E and niacin)
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Burns and skin trauma – causing pressure on the nerve
  • Tumors
  • Side effects from medications chemotherapy and from certain infections (viral or bacterial)
  • Autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, etc.
  • Inherited disorders such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease are hereditary types of neuropathy

Symptoms :

The common symptoms are numbness, tingling, pain and/or weakness and difficulty and doing basic movements such as getting up from a seated position, raising an arm over the head, or walking upstairs.
