Cancer Rehabilitation

Many survivors of cancer experience lasting, adverse effects caused by either their disease or its treatment. Rehab interventions, both established and new, often can reverse or ameliorate the impairments (body function and structure) found in these patients.

Oncology rehabilitation has long been a part of the management of cancer, but with increased survivorship, these efforts have evolved from simple supportive and palliative care to now include complex rehabilitation interventions designed to restore the integrity of organ structure and function, to remediate functional loss, and to adapt to the environment to allow full participation in daily activities and life roles.

Cancer Rehabilitation helps people regain these abilities and maintain independence.

Disorders across the domains of body structure and function, activities, and participation are referred to as impairments, limitations, and restrictions, respectively.

Oncology Rehabilitation Goals:

  • Improve physical strength. This can offset limitations caused by cancer and cancer treatment.
  • Increase your ability to care for oneself. This reduces the amount of support needed by caregivers.
  • Adjust to actual, perceived, and potential losses.
  • Reduce anxiety and depression.
  • Manage symptoms of cancer and its treatment. These may include fatigue, sleep problems, and pain.
  • Reduce hospital stays.

Conditions:

Cancer can be very hard on the body. Effective rehabilitation, if incorporated before, during and after the treatment, can help patients fight back and treat the below health conditions associated with the disease:

  • Fatigue
  • Physical Weakness
  • Poor endurance
  • Decline in balance
  • Postural changes
  • Joint Stiffness
  • Pain
  • Difficulty in walking
  • Numbness in feet/hands
